Disability Options Network Advocates for Consumers

Last week, Disability Options Network was invited to participate in a roundtable discussion hosted by Senator Bob Casey (D-PA). The roundtable focused on the importance of Medicaid and the impact that this program has on so many individuals with disabilities and their families. The discussion included family members of adults with intellectual disabilities, parents of young children with disabilities and special health care needs, a self-advocate, and representatives from two national disability-related advocacy organizations.

Each participant had the opportunity to described in detail how important Medicaid is for individuals to attend school, work and be a productive member of their communities. Without Medicaid funded health care and long term supports, families would be forced to place their family members into institutional settings. These programs provide the option of community-based living.

Senator Casey was also instrumental in passing the ABLE Act which allows individuals with disabilities and their families to create a savings account providing for their future, as well as, his diligence in the Money Follows the Person program. The discussion provided Senator Casey and his staff with many reasons for continuing the fight for Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security.

Disability Options Network appreciates Senator Casey’s continued support of funding and programs for the many people that we serve.
