Volunteering

Internally, having volunteers helps free up the staff to take care of overview of our events without sacrificing the extra set of hands needed to get things done. Volunteers are provided the chance to interact with and assist individuals with a disability, helping them to understand the basic barriers that people with disabilities face every day, and exposing them to individuals with a disability to help our volunteers grow more comfortable with interacting with the people instead of the disability. These events also give our consumers the chance to talk with our volunteers in a way that starts to develop meaningful conversations that can help remove educational barriers between themselves and other members of the community.

DON believes that volunteers have become a vital part of the success of our larger events. By helping the staff with setup, cleanup, and event logistics, DON has been able to provide a great experience for both our volunteers and our consumers.
